"First Home In Bulgaria" (Sofia, Bulgaria) - Design Home Game Challenge

A dear friend of mine has always had a phobia of snails, so I am wondering just how she would react to this mammoth of a snail!  With her own eye for style and interior decorating, I’d like to think she might find him kinda ‘cute and playful’.  I, anxiously, wait to hear her thoughts about this not so slimey-looking, harmless fella.

You know, it’s amazing what you will find when conducting research for design inspiration.  And, I sure didn’t expect to find this uniquely sculptured home during my search of Sofia, Bulgaria. Prominently displayed in the Simeonovo district of Sofia, this colorful, five-story private residence, designed by Simeon Simeonov, has become a major tourist attraction and neighborhood icon that even Picasso can appreciate.

I think most interior designers would agree with me that to produce a playful design means using a mix of vibrant colors, shapes, and forms, much like the Snail House.  The DH designers should have had a blast crafting a living room that is playful aesthetically for our client, who is a “property virgin”.   In her search for her first home, she found the ideal flat that compliments her youthful and artistic personality as a musician for a national orchestra in the capital city of Sofia.

A captivating graphic of a blended golden and white triangular lattice serves as the accent wall in the living room…the perfect canvas to create the playful design deserved by the client.  Check out the designs below for ideas on designing a playful style living room.  Don't forget to comment below on how you think the DH designers did in this Design Home Game challenge?

McKinly Ray Designer Spotlight!

Designer Gloucester

Aaah!  Playful and youthful, yet mature enough to proclaim independence as a homeowner, this design fits the bill!  The various forms, shapes, patterns, and colors all establish harmony in this space. Visual interest is achieved predominantly through designer Gloucester application of lines and repetition.  The triangular shape is repeated on angled legs of the  Apt2B Norwalk Coffee Table, United Strangers Door Beam Large Bookshelf, and transitions to the triangle lattice accent wall, where the focal point is the Blade Wall Clock.  Here, again we see the repetition of orange on the wall, the DWR Womb Ottoman, the Modern Bright Orange Treillage Garden Seat Stool from Kathy Kuo Home, and the zebra print rug from Loloi's Zadie Collection. The gentle curves of the Ardmore Side Table and the Rodeo Rocking Chair, both from Apt2B, helps soften straight lines of the bookshelf and DWR's Eames Sofa Compact, which color coordinates beautifully with the bookshelf and enhances the space through color contrast.  Finally, Gloucester chose the fun little Elipse Table Lamp from Apt2B to illuminate the space . Indeed, this design most definitely fits this client's "play" bill!

Designer Alegna

All joking aside, this design screams PLAYFUL!  Alegna found the use of a vibrant analogous color scheme and contrast to generate rhythm and visual interest in this space.  The eye never settles on any one hue.  The bright yellow on the wall graphic takes a seat in the Apt2B Pacific Chair, while red makes itself right at home on the DWR Nelson Marshmallow Sofa and the Worlds Away Elena RDN side table.  (And, I love how the valentine candy box adds a tasty touch to this color scheme). Midway through this lively palette, as it is on the color wheel, orange makes a play on design; from the Serena & Lily Sebastopol Stool to the floor on the rug from Loloi's Zadie Collection.  Alegna doesn't meet a beat using the design principle of rhythm.  There is so much movement, here, especially radial, created by the circles on the sofa and the octagon shapes in the CFC Mones Bookcase.  The dark hues from the Apt2B Fair Oak Table Lamp and the Madera Home Monroe Black and Pink Pinstripe Velvet Ottoman (yes! pink) offers the eye a place to rest in this delightfully designed living room.
