Really, It's Just A Game...or Is It? - "Majestic Terrace View" (Kotor, Montenegro) - Design Home Game Challenge

Really, It’s Just A Game…or Is It?

If you’ve found yourself loving Crowdstar’s Design Home game and are actively involved in the player communities, then you have been exposed to much debate and discussion about scores, voting, and your knowledge of interior design, or more appropriately interior decorating.  Some players’ views and viewpoints have even offended co-players through critiques about their designs.  And, some have mentioned that they are intimidated or uncomfortable posting their designs out of fear of being ridiculed by professional designer players.  But the pros have confessed that Design Home is as much of a challenge for them as it is for the amateur players.

While the pros might have practical knowledge and experience in the real world of interior design/decorating, they, too, are susceptible to the low scores, budget constraints, style criteria and restrictions, and limited inventory; all known to be within the “scope of the design project.”  I admit that I am surprised and disappointed when my designs are voted down and my average continues to spiral down to the low fours (and, 5’s are few and far between).  Because, as a player and designer, I endeavor to work within the “scope” approaching each challenge as if designing for an actual client.

But, then I remind myself, that yes, first and foremost, this is a game and should be enjoyed by all players, and that the enjoyment shouldn’t be based upon the final results from a voting system which has proven to have glitches and contingencies, but from the final delivery of the player designer.  We all benefit from so much more than a score.  Here’s the opportunity to practice our skills on something we love doing, to get inspiration from unknown destinations, to gain brand and product knowledge, and to be inspired and enlightened from a community of players.

My point is this…if you as a designer player (pro or amateur) are pleased with your design and you believe that the scope of the design project has been fulfilled, then you should have all confidence in submitting the design and be proud to display your unique style and composition.  Because the reality of it all, is that there are no real clients or target audience to whom you must sell your design.  When I read what one player said, “I liked it but wasn’t sure the voters would,” I thought of Picasso.

For blogging purposes, I tend to write from my viewpoint as an interior designer with the intent of spotlighting designs for their application of the principles and elements of designs and overall aesthetic, all in lieu of the scores.  And, as I further organize this blog, some days will emphasize 5.00 star winners, but all designs are considered when I blog about design style application, color schemes, the destination influence, the principles and elements of design, and more.  And, just so our non-pro players will know and be encouraged, we really are inspired and impressed with your wonderful design talent.
